Tuesday, February 17, 2009 The Animal Law Section presents a free lecture entitled "Putting Meat on the Table: Industrial Farm Animal Production in America" On February 17, 2009, the State Bar of Texas Animal Law Section will host Michael J. Blackwell, DVM, MPH, Assistant Surgeon General USPHS (ret.) to present the Report of the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production in America. Dr. Blackwell, a key commission member, will address the dramatic transition in animal agriculture in America -- from farm animal production on small and medium-sized family farms to systems of large intensive operations, known as confined animal feeding operations or "CAFOs," and the resulting negative impacts on the environment, public health, rural communities and the health and well-being of the animals themselves. Dr. Blackwell will also address the state of federal regulation and recommended legislation.
