a vision of many voices from AR2008
The holiday season also marks the time of reflection on the past year. Today we review the effects that our consumption habits have on impacting the planet, some humane holiday observances, and new ways that we can help animals as we enter the winter season and prepare for the New Year. We share a candle-lighting ceremony for the animals, a compassionate invitation from holocaust survivor Alex Hershaft, and a lesson in global sustainability from Richard Schwartz, courtesy of FARM's recent Animal Rights National Conference. Kim McCoy of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society gives a preview of the SHARK ANGELS project, and Bett Sundermeyer of NoKillHouston.org explains the urgent opportunity for citizens to help transform the city pound into a no-kill facility.
A Candle Lighting for the Animals: A Compassionate Plea for Non-Violence

Alex Hershaft: Conference Chair AR2008 and Founder of F.A.R.M.
"My experiences in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi Holocaust had a profound impact on my subsequent life choices.I felt some guilt that I lived when so many others didn't and a sense of duty to redeem my survival by assuming their share of responsibility for making this planet a better place to live for all its inhabitants. After the war, I became active in the religious freedom, civil rights, peace, and environmental movements, receiving much fulfillment, but always feeling that I was missing something.Following my deeply emotional experience at the World Vegetarian Congress, I took time to reflect on the root of the key problems challenging planetary survival, i.e., disease, hunger, environmental devastation, oppression, and war. Amazingly, all evidence pointed to animal agriculture as the common root cause. My life's mission then became crystal clear. In particular, my experiences in the Nazi Holocaust allowed me to empathize with the condition of farm animals in today's factory farms, auction yards, and slaughterhouses.I know first hand what it's like to be treated like a worthless object, to be hunted by the killers of my family and friends, to wonder each day if I will see the next sunrise, to be crammed in a cattle car on the way to slaughter."

Urgent Action for Pound Reform: Opportunity to act for No-Kill Houston
Bett Sundermeyer from No-Kill Houston explains the urgent need for citizens to speak up now for reform at the city pound, BARC, Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care before a new shelter director is appointed. The City of Houston recently agreed to hire Nathan Winograd, Director of the No Kill Advocacy Center to perform an assessment of B.A.R.C., however the city has not yet agreed to the recruitment search necessary to make Houston a NO-KILL city. Letters and phone calls are needed to the mayor and city council to speak up for shelter reform, and No-Kill Houston is in need of donations to bring this change to city government. Please visit their website for full details.
